New York and Seattle, October 19, 2003 – At the Children’s Club fashion fair at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, SwaddleDesigns announced an innovative product – The Ultimate Swaddling BlanketTM  with 123 SwaddleTM Tip Tag (patent pending).  The blanket is optimized for effective swaddling by use of 100% premium cotton flannel, optimum shape and size and non-slip decorative edging.  The exclusive 123 Swaddle Tip Tag includes instructions on HOW TO SWADDLE in a very cute, easy to understand, step-by-step illustration sewn onto the edge of the blanket.

Lynette Damir, RN and mother of two small children, founded SwaddleDesigns because she understands the importance of swaddling babies to help calm and comfort them.  She was inspired to design the Ultimate Swaddling Blanket with an educational component to help new parents master the art of swaddling.  During the design process, she consulted with PhDs in infant research at the University of Washington.

“The lost art of swaddling is making a come back as many parenting books and magazines highlight the benefits of swaddling.  Unfortunately, new parents have trouble remembering how to swaddle, and rectangular, undersized receiving blankets are not effective for swaddling,” said Lynette Damir, RN, Mother, and Founder of SwaddleDesigns.  “Our blanket’s size, shape, and fabric make it optimum for swaddling and since the instructions are sewn in a strategic spot on the blanket – parents will never have trouble remembering how to swaddle their baby.”

“The Ultimate Swaddling Blanket has many uses beyond swaddling.  The generous size makes it a great modesty blanket for breastfeeding, shield from the sun, and play mat for tummy time,” continued Lynette Damir.  “I was inspired to design a product that would be useful and affordable, as well as, soft and beautiful.   Much care and passion went into the design and I hope my blanket becomes a favorite for parents and their babies.”

“Busy moms need a solution for their maternity and parenting needs,” stated Laurie McCartney, Founder and CEO of babystyle. “Our goal is to make life easier for these women. To meet that goal, babystyle offers high quality, stylish and well-priced baby gear, gifts and developmental toys.  The Ultimate Swaddling Blanket is a beautiful and one-of-a-kind item that we are thrilled to bring to our loyal customers.”

Recent medical studies have documented the benefits of swaddling babies such as reducing the risk of SIDS.  In December 2002, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis proved that infants sleep with fewer awakenings when swaddled, and swaddling may help parents keep their sleeping infants remain on their back because babies sleep better when swaddled.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be placed on their backs to sleep to reduce the risk of SIDS.  Unfortunately, when infants reach 2 months of age, about 20 percent of parents in the US place their babies on their stomachs to sleep because they say they appear more comfortable or to sleep better. Washington School of Medicine concluded that swaddling will further reduce the risk of SIDS by allowing infants to stay asleep on their backs, given parents would be less likely to intervene and change the infants to the risky stomach-sleeping position.
